ZEDRA’s London based Audit and Global Expansion Managing Director, Louise Morriss, shares her thoughts on what you need to succeed in an accountancy career.
How did you get into the industry?
My interest in a numbers-focused career really began during a work experience placement when I was 16. It was the first time I saw how numbers could be used to tell a story, to solve problems, and to drive decisions in a real business setting.
That experience sparked a genuine curiosity which has stuck with me. From there, I decided to formally pursue a career in finance, committing to the rigorous training and qualifications required for accountancy. It was a clear path, but not without its challenges, and each stage reaffirmed that I had found a profession that aligned with both my strengths and interests.
What has been a key learning in your career?
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned throughout my career is to embrace change and lean into challenges. They often become the defining moments that shape not only your professional growth but also your character.
The unexpected can be uncomfortable, but it’s where the most meaningful progress happens. Just as important is the company you keep; surrounding yourself with smart, supportive, and values-driven people creates an environment where you can thrive, be challenged, and continuously learn. Success is rarely a solo journey, it’s built with and alongside others.
What would you say to someone considering a career in your industry?
For anyone considering a career in accountancy, my first piece of advice would be to really take the time to research the industry. Not only what the day to day roles look like, but also the qualifications and ongoing training required to progress.
It’s a profession that demands commitment, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. And while numbers are certainly a core part of the job, accountancy is about so much more. It’s about understanding businesses, interpreting data to support strategic decisions, and building trusted relationships. If you’re curious, analytical, and enjoy solving problems, it can be an exciting and dynamic career path.
What are the opportunities and challenges you’re seeing in the industry?
Despite the fast paced world we live in, I don’t think a day will come when a business does not need professional advisers to guide them through ongoing economic challenges.
The opportunity for us as accountants is to be that trusted partner who will always be there. The challenge is to ensure we continue to prioritise the development of great people within our organisation to carry on delivering an outstanding service.
