Women in Leadership: Spotlight on Tina Cain
Tina Cain, Compliance Manager and Deputy MLRO at ZEDRA Manchester, reflects on her career journey, the importance of continuous learning, and why compliance is vital for business growth.
How did you get into the industry?
I started in a very junior role and worked my way up through a number of different positions across the business. That experience gave me a strong, practical understanding of how the organisation operates and how different teams fit together.
Over time, I moved into Compliance and Governance, which felt like a natural progression. Alongside this, I completed several professional qualifications, which helped build both my knowledge and the confidence to take on more responsibility.
What has been a key learning in your career?
One of the biggest lessons I have learned is that time does not stand still, particularly in this industry. The business environment is constantly changing, and that means you need to keep challenging yourself and remain open to learning.
Stepping outside your comfort zone can feel uncomfortable at first, but it often leads to opportunities you did not expect and shows you just how capable you really are.
What would you say to someone considering a career in your industry?
Compliance is demanding work and it’s not always the most visible role within an organisation. At times, its importance can be underestimated, but it plays a critical role in supporting and protecting the business as it grows.
If you are prepared to put in the effort, keep learning, and take your responsibilities seriously, it is a career that offers real purpose and impact.
What are the opportunities and challenges you’re seeing in the industry?
There are strong opportunities to lead by example and to be part of positive change within the business. Compliance professionals play an important role in shaping the future by strengthening governance and promoting ethical decision making.
One of the biggest challenges is ensuring there is sufficient investment in processes and controls. These are not always the most visible priorities, but they are essential for protecting the business and enabling sustainable growth.
