Nita MacDonald, Head of Compliance at ZEDRA Isle of Man, shares her reflections on an unexpected career path, the value of trusting your instincts, and the evolving challenges and opportunities in the compliance landscape.
How did you get into the industry?
Honestly, it happened by accident. After a business restructure, I was asked if I’d consider moving into Compliance. I didn’t know much about it at the time, but I thought, why not give it a try? That decision turned out to be a turning point in my career. Sometimes the best opportunities are the ones you don’t plan for.
What has been a key learning in your career?
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that career fulfilment doesn’t always follow a straight path. You might not find the job that truly clicks until later in life, and that’s perfectly fine. For me, it wasn’t until my 50s that I found the role that felt right.
What would you say to someone considering a career in your industry?
Don’t let others talk you out of it. Compliance can be demanding, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. Trust your instincts, stay curious, and keep learning. If you enjoy solving problems and want to make a genuine impact, it’s a great space to build a career.
What are the opportunities and challenges you’re seeing in the industry?
Regulatory expectations continue to grow, and the geopolitical landscape is becoming more complex. These challenges also bring big opportunities. It’s an exciting time for professionals who are ready to step up, adapt, and lead with confidence and care.
