Women in Leadership: Spotlight on Joan Gracia-Eustatia

Joan Gracia-Eustatia, Managing Director at ZEDRA in Curaçao, shares how a newspaper ad sparked her career in fund services, why passion matters most, and her advice for thriving in a fast moving industry.

How did you get into the industry?

I started my career in banking with a strong desire to learn and grow. One day, a vacancy in the newspaper caught my attention. It was a position for a Fund Accountant, so I applied and got the job.

I was excited because the role combined accounting, which I was studying at the time, with the alternative investment industry. That blend felt like the perfect fit for me, a challenge that aligned with my curiosity and ambition.

That opportunity became the foundation of my career and sparked a passion that continues to drive me today.

What has been a key learning in your career?

One of the most important lessons I have learned is that passion for your work is everything. Skills and experience matter, but passion is what keeps you motivated through challenges and helps you grow.

When you truly enjoy what you do, it gives you the energy to keep going, even on tough days. For me, that passion has been the driving force behind every step of my journey. It makes me think of the quote: “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”

What would you say to someone considering a career in your industry?

If you are thinking about a career in this industry, you will love the diversity. It is an environment that is always evolving, which means you can’t be afraid of change and must be ready to learn new things constantly.

The industry adapts quickly, but that is exactly what makes it exciting and full of opportunities for growth. Plus, you will have the chance to meet and work with clients from different cultures and perspectives, which makes the experience even more rewarding.

What are the opportunities and challenges you’re seeing in the industry?

The opportunities in the fund industry are endless. There is so much room to grow, innovate, and explore different areas.

However, the challenges are significant. Technology is advancing at a rapid pace, and companies must adapt quickly to stay competitive. It’s not just a responsibility for organisations; it is essential for individuals too. Whether your role is in technology or not, you need to stay informed of the latest developments if you want to stay ahead.

As women, we often navigate challenges both inside and outside the workplace, including balancing work-life responsibilities and societal expectations. These experiences can be demanding, but they also make us stronger and more resilient.

My advice is to stay curious, stay confident, and never stop learning.
