Cathay Life is the largest life insurer in Taiwan and this will be the first major refurbishment within the UK by a Taiwanese insurance company.

ZEDRA and the leading Taiwanese insurance firm, Cathay Life Insurance Co., Ltd (Cathay Life), are delighted to announce the successful environmentally-friendly refurbishment of the Woolgate Exchange in the City of London.

As managing Trustees, ZEDRA has been instrumental in handling all the administration related to the refurbishment.

Cathay Life is the largest life insurer in Taiwan and this will be the first major refurbishment within the UK by a Taiwanese insurance company.

The Woolgate Exchange, located in the heart of the City of London, is a nine-story building, which has been reimagined by Stiff and Trevillion as a transformative space that combines sustainability, innovation, and functionality.

The plans include 345,000 sq ft of net internal area and the introduction of a new 1,500 sq ft rooftop pavilion boasting unique views of St Paul’s Cathedral and the City.

The development aligns with Cathay Life’s longstanding commitment to ESG principles and is on track to become an exemplar for state-of-the-art retrofits. The refurbishment anticipates net-zero carbon in both construction and operation thanks to an ambitious ‘reuse and retain’ strategy.

The building will be entirely electrically run on renewable energy, adding 17,500 sq ft of new terraces and two new public parks with 13,000 tonnes of Co2 locked into the retained building.

Cathay Life’s refurbishment has been further strengthened by the appointment of best-in-class teams from Stanhope, Savills, JLL and MACE, reflecting our collective dedication to shaping the future of commercial real estate.
