Women in Leadership: Spotlight on Kimmy Cheung
Kimmy Cheung’s path from corporate governance to trust leadership in Hong Kong is built on technical expertise, adaptability, and a strong client focus.
How did you get into the industry?
I began my career in the company secretarial field, where I developed a strong foundation in corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and board support work. From the outset, I was exposed to a wide range of responsibilities that allowed me to build both technical knowledge and practical experience.
Over time, this hands‑on exposure deepened my understanding of how organisations operate at both strategic and statutory levels. That progression naturally guided my professional development and ultimately led me to build my career in the trust industry.
What has been a key learning in your career?
A key learning throughout my career has been the importance of developing extensive trust knowledge, mastering the administration of trust structures, and maintaining strong, transparent communication with clients. Through years of practical experience, I’ve learned how essential it is to understand the complexities of trust operations – from regulatory compliance to fiduciary responsibilities – to ensure trusts are managed accurately and responsibly.
Equally important has been recognising the value of clear communication, especially when translating technical concepts into practical understanding. This is fundamental to building long-term, trusted relationships. The combination of technical expertise and client‑centric communication has shaped my approach and enabled me to deliver consistent value in my role.
What would you say to someone considering a career in your industry?
A career in trust and fiduciary services offers strong long‑term growth and the chance to make meaningful impact. As global wealth expands and regulatory expectations rise, the demand for skilled trust professionals continues to grow, creating a stable environment with a wide range of opportunities.
Beyond career progression, this industry allows you to play a vital role in helping clients protect their assets, support future generations, and navigate complex financial and governance needs. It’s a career where technical expertise meets purpose – where every decision contributes to clients’ long‑term security and peace of mind.
For those seeking a profession that is intellectually rewarding and personally fulfilling, trust services is an exceptional place to build a future.
What are the opportunities and challenges you’re seeing in the industry?
The trust industry is facing both significant opportunities and meaningful challenges as it continues to evolve. Increasing regulatory requirements are raising expectations around compliance, governance, and risk management, demanding that professionals stay agile and well informed.
At the same time, advancements in technology are transforming how trust structures are administered – streamlining processes, enhancing accuracy, and improving client reporting. While these shifts introduce complexity and require ongoing upskilling, they are also strengthening the industry’s maturity and resilience. As trust professionals adapt to new expectations and embrace emerging tools, the sector is becoming more innovative and better equipped to deliver high‑quality, value‑driven services to clients.
